Get Better, Yesterday
--
Constant improvement, Kaizen, self-improvement. These are all powerful concepts of always learning and getting better. But what is one thing that really drives growth? Is it mentorship? Is it, doing it yourself so that you learn and get better? Or is it studying, reading, and implementing?
I think it’s all of the above, but a trigger is needed. Before I reveal that, let me cover a few of the common ways to “get better.”
Let’s start with the famous old mentorship
From biblical times till today, gurus, experts, coaches litter the marketplace. Some are so so, some suck, and there are a few that are excellent. No names here. This isn’t about comparing who is better or worse. In my opinion, anyone who has what you want is better than you.
Mentorship is the fuel that got me going. And when a mentor guides you, 90% of the time, you have no idea what they are talking about. They tell you to do something. You just do it. They are better than you, they know more than you, and you want to be where they want to be. So quit questioning their motives. You just follow.
Mentors will also tell you many things you don’t understand, yet. They will give you warnings that seem impossible. Don’t be afraid of success. When your business grows, and you make way more money, it gets way harder. Sounds like BS but a few years later, you will get hit with that realization, they were right!
You have no idea how many times I wake up in the middle of the night, say damn it! My mentor was right. So many times, my mentor warned me about a situation that would happen, and I thought, no way, that's not possible. But no matter how bizarre the warning is, it just happens. I love my mentor, kind of hate him too.
Don’t get stuck in mentorship
You know, the biggest growth I got was venturing on my own. The number of people that stick to mentors for life is appalling. It’s like a chick that can’t leave its nest. Or an adult that still thinks like a toddler. You will NEVER learn everything your mentor knows. So don’t bother. You will…
